My office was started by Patti Bowen DDS in the late 80s, at the Palouse Empire Mall, Moscow. She and her husband, who was an orthopedic surgeon, planned on it losing money so it could be a tax write-off. That plan failed, because it was successful from the beginning.
I bought the practice right out of dental school in 1997 and have worked it solo for the last 29.5 years, under the legal name of Family Dental Center of Moscow, DBA My Dentist, which still resides at the Palouse Mall, 2016 W. Pullman Rd. Moscow, ID.
I always thought I would build my own brick and mortar practice, but mall life is so convenient, I never left. It is an outside entrance only, with high visibility. Right now my lease is $1,600 month. I will be renewing it soon for another five years. The mall is interested in keeping us here-- it is part of their 'Lifestyle Community' business approach.
Through the entire time I have had 2 hygienists, 1 secretary and 1 assistant. Because of babies, we are looking for another hygienist. 4 ops, with the possibility of 5.
The office has new technology: Genesis software, CEREC, OP300 3D conebeam, Woodpecker sensors, and a DeLight laser. Though we can do computer charting, I still prefer paper.
I only work 3 days/week with 8 weeks off/year. There is room for growth. Web: jeffklinedds.com
Last year the office produced $707,000 and collected $668,000. Overhead was 31%
2024: Collections $746,000; OH was 42%. 2023: C $814,000; OH 42%. 2022: $813,000; OH 34%. 2021: $806k/42%. 2020: 679k/34%.
I could keep the office running at a $800k production level, quite easily, but I dont feel like working that hard anymore. Another hygienist would be helpful with production.
Moscow is a fantastic university town. A great place to raise a family.
